Top 5 Picks From Image's Solicits for May 2014

In a new feature, I look forward at the Top 5 picks from Image's May 2014 Solicits, revealed in full on Comic Book Resources.

It's the time of the month that is for me, one of the most exciting and nervous times as a comics fan. The times of new comic series - we could get new titles launched and old ones cancelled, as well as creative changes and jumping on points. It can often be hard as a new reader to work out where to jump onto comics, especially creator owned ones that don't have .NOW marked handily on them in order to tell you when you can jump on them or not. However, that said - there are some cracking solicits from Image in May later this year, and here are the Top 5 that you should be adding to your pull-list.

SAGA #19

Story: Brian K. Vaughan | Art: Fiona Staples | Price: $2.99 | Release Date: May 21

SAGA returns! New planet, new adversaries, and a very new direction, all from the same old Hugo Award-winning team.

RETAILER FRIENDS: Thanks to you, our audience keeps growing, as new readers continue to get caught up on trades before jumping to our monthly issues, so please make sure to order enough for your customers, old and new. And thanks again! -- Brian & Fiona

WHY SHOULD YOU BE READING? It's awesome. I'm behind on this title having only read Volume 1 but Saga is easily one of the best titles right now at Image and I'm hoping that #19 is going to be a good jumping on point, as new directions generally are. Fiona Staples is a fantastic artist and Brian K. Vaughan can write incredibly well - so it should be interesting to see where Vaughan takes the series from here.

THE WALKING DEAD #127

Story: Robert Kirkman | Art: Charlie Adlard, Stefano Gaudiano, Cliff Rathburn | Price: $2.99 | Release Date: May 14

DOUBLE-SIZED ISSUE FOR ONLY $2.99! In the aftermath of "ALL OUT WAR" we discover...A NEW BEGINNING.

WHY SHOULD YOU BE READING? Like Saga, I've only read the first volume of The Walking Dead and it's something that every comic fan should have at least heard of. It's the definitive zombie series at the moment and currently in the middle of the second season of the awesome TV show I can't wait to get stuck into the comic - the aftermath of All Out War should be a good jumping on point and a double sized issue for the standard price is always a good thing.

WITCHBLADE #127
Story: Ron Marz | Art: Laura Braga | Price: $5.99 | Release Date: May 7

DOUBLE-SIZED ANNIVERSARY ISSUE!
Starting a new storyline, the team of writer RON MARZ and artist LAURA BRAGA continue their acclaimed run, providing an entry point for new readers, as well as a celebration of all that's gone before. Also features a second story by MARZ & BRAGA, revealing a previously untold tale of the Witchblade in feudal Japan, as well as other bonus features.

WHY SHOULD YOU BE READING? I've been reading Witchblade since the return of Ron Marz and have been loving every issue. it's just a superb series - and I'm glad that an upcoming jumping on point will get readers back into the title. The only downside is the pricetag - especially when you consider that The Walking Dead has ten more pages and is still only $2.99 -

C.O.W.L #1

Story: Kyle Higgins | Art: Alec Siegel | Price: $3.50 | Release Date: May 28

Welcome to the "Chicago Organized Workers League" -- the world's first Super-Hero Labor Union! While C.O.W.L. once stood as a beacon of hope against an epidemic of organized crime and an unbeatable "brotherhood" of Super-Villains, the union now faces its fiercest foe yet -- a disillusioned public. In targeting the last of the great villains, C.O.W.L. attempts to prove its value to the world and to each other, while staving off villainy from both outside and inside its offices.

WHY SHOULD YOU BE READING? Kyle Higgins’ excellent run on Nightwing wraps up next month and he’s moving over to Image in May to write a brand new ongoing series detailing the adventures of the world’s first Super-Hero Labour Union – C.O.W.L, who have now turned into a brotherhood of Super-Villains. Given Higgins’ strong Nightwing series it’s look set to rock – because things could get very interesting from here on out.

CHEW/REVIVAL #1
Story: John Layman, Tim Seeley | Price: $4.99 | Release Date: May 28

TWO GREAT TASTES THAT TASTE REALLY WEIRD TOGETHER!

Tony Chu heads to Wisconsin in two all-new original tales by the creative teams of both critically acclaimed titles! A great jumping-on point for readers who've heard how damn good these titles are on their own, and a twisted delight for those already in the know!

WHY SHOULD YOU BE READING? Coming out in the same week as C.O.W.L, this is a new Chew/Revival crossover and I’m looking to jump on board the series mainly due to Layman’s excellent work on Detective Comics which is sadly coming to a conclusion following the Gothopia storyline. This series has been highly praised so it should be a great place to get on board as well.
